Across The Traxx(Classic.) Photobucket

Street Report Magazine: After reading your bio and discography, your story depicts struggle and success in the utmost extremes. How has your parents’ journey leading up to your upbringing contributed to your drive and determination to make something out of nothing?

CLASSIC.: They are role models to me and are THE truest representation of what success is, without the accolades. I credit a lot of how I am to my first trip to Vietnam back in 1993 with my father. When we landed at the Ho Chi Minh City airport it looked like a hospital…NO lie...we went to my Grandfather's house in Da Nang and it was pretty bad. They didn't have any glass windows, just the windscreens with the shutters, no real doors. No real beds, just hard, wooden surfaces the size of a bed that they slept on. You had to throw a bucket down a well and bring it back up to bathe yourself. Bathroom-wise, there was an Outhouse with a water hole in the ground. No A/C, the power is controlled by the government…people living in alleys with just a tarp to cover their heads, loose tile sitting on top of the ground, buying a bowl of soup for five cents and you can’t afford it…it’s a lot to take in as a kid. It single-handedly changed my life. Being a young knucklehead I never realized how easy it is for me and all Americans until that trip.

So for my folks to have never graduated from school, living through the Vietnam War, coming over to America and not having any money, to becoming business owners today, it means and feels like I can do ANYTHING, only if I tried and put my mind to it.

Street Report Magazine: How long have you been producing music and when did you realize that it was what you wanted to spend your life doing?

CLASSIC.: I've been playing Classical piano since I was 4 and guitar since I was 7, hence the name CLASSIC. I really hated practicing....but it was I guess a natural gift that I had. I never brag because I believe if you're really good at something, then people will speak for you. I've played with Orchestras and have been to the Tanglewood Institute in Boston, where all of the most talented kids around the world came to better their craft during the summertime.

CONNECTED TO THE STREETS

SAIGON: FIGHTING FOR A FAIR CHANCE; By Rae Hardy
Photobucket

If I could sum up this rap artist in one word, it would be passionate; don’t let the soft word fool ya though. Known to be able to hold his own lyrically and on the streets, rap artist Saigon is far from finished. This new father is a man with a mission. Passionate about his love for hip hop, and determined to make a difference in the streets, Saigon has his music focused on more important things rather than just spittin 16 bars over a hot track.

Working with his nonprofit organization Abandoned Nation, Saigon is pushing to make a change in the lives of young people today through the messages they are getting in the music as well as on the streets. After being incarcerated, he realized that one of the major disadvantages for the youth in the black community was that either one or both of the parents is behind bars. Understanding the importance of family values and communication, Abandoned Nation along with In Arms Reach joined together to provide kids in the greater New York City area with lessons on how to become young men and women. Teaching skills from the smallest things like the proper way to put on a tie to learning how to read music and the importance of literacy, the purpose of these organizations is to be there for them; providing mentoring and guidance that is lacking in the home.

Reggae

Built with a purpose & a message By: Rae Hardy

David Kirton
Photobucket

When you hear the name David Kirton, you may not recognize it. However, once you hear one of his tracks, it is a name that you will never forget. This Barbados born reggae singer has an exceptionally original sound. Mixing smooth reggae rhythms with soulful roots, dipped in pop-laced tracks, with each pushing a positive message of peace and change. Crediting God for giving him his musical talent and his parents for his genetic makeup, David will tell you he was born to be a musician. This humble man who lives by the sea comes with a message which he delivers it through the sweetest vibes. “I want people to know there is a small island in the middle of the sea that is rich in history, “ he states.

As a teenager, David followed Jamaican reggae music heavily and after hearing Jamaican legend Bob Marley being played on his local radio stations, he decided to research the culture of reggae music. Becoming inspired after what he learned, David realized this was something that he could do; tell his own life story through music to touch the world while allowing it to have a purpose and a message.

In 1999, Stranger, his debut album was released in which he viewed as more of a collection of songs that started out as him testing himself. He soon realized this collection turned into hits. Songs like “Cool Breezing”, “Stand Up” and “Stranger” are all fan favorites that pushed David into the spotlight on the underground reggae scene. With his follow up album, Time for Change, David earned accolades at the Barbados Music Award in 2008 to include song, video and Reggae artist of the year. He is a Barbados Cornerstone recipient and has also performed on Jay Leno's The Tonight Show and was the first singer ever to perform at The RHS Chelsea Flower Show in London launching the Royal season for 2008.
