CONNECTED TO THE STREETS

SAIGON: FIGHTING FOR A FAIR CHANCE; By Rae Hardy
Photobucket

If I could sum up this rap artist in one word, it would be passionate; don’t let the soft word fool ya though. Known to be able to hold his own lyrically and on the streets, rap artist Saigon is far from finished. This new father is a man with a mission. Passionate about his love for hip hop, and determined to make a difference in the streets, Saigon has his music focused on more important things rather than just spittin 16 bars over a hot track.

Working with his nonprofit organization Abandoned Nation, Saigon is pushing to make a change in the lives of young people today through the messages they are getting in the music as well as on the streets. After being incarcerated, he realized that one of the major disadvantages for the youth in the black community was that either one or both of the parents is behind bars. Understanding the importance of family values and communication, Abandoned Nation along with In Arms Reach joined together to provide kids in the greater New York City area with lessons on how to become young men and women. Teaching skills from the smallest things like the proper way to put on a tie to learning how to read music and the importance of literacy, the purpose of these organizations is to be there for them; providing mentoring and guidance that is lacking in the home.

David Kirton

When you hear the name David Kirton, you may not recognize it. However, once you hear one of his tracks, it is a name that you will never forget. This Barbados born reggae singer has an exceptionally original sound. Mixing smooth reggae rhythms with soulful roots, dipped in pop-laced tracks, with each pushing a positive message of peace and change. Crediting God for giving him his musical talent and his parents for his genetic makeup, David will tell you he was born to be a musician. This humble man who lives by the sea comes with a message which he delivers it through the sweetest vibes. “I want people to know there is a small island in the middle of the sea that is rich in history, “ he states.

As a teenager, David followed Jamaican reggae music heavily and after hearing Jamaican legend Bob Marley being played on his local radio stations, he decided to research the culture of reggae music. Becoming inspired after what he learned, David realized this was something that he could do; tell his own life story through music to touch the world while allowing it to have a purpose and a message.

In 1999, Stranger, his debut album was released in which he viewed as more of a collection of songs that started out as him testing himself. He soon realized this collection turned into hits. Songs like “Cool Breezing”, “Stand Up” and “Stranger” are all fan favorites that pushed David into the spotlight on the underground reggae scene. With his follow up album, Time for Change, David earned accolades at the Barbados Music Award in 2008 to include song, video and Reggae artist of the year. He is a Barbados Cornerstone recipient and has also performed on Jay Leno's The Tonight Show and was the first singer ever to perform at The RHS Chelsea Flower Show in London launching the Royal season for 2008.
